Natalie Portman is an Israeli-born American actress who was born on June 9, 1981. She has had a long career in film, having starred in both blockbusters and independent films, for which she has received numerous awards, including an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, and two Golden Globe Awards. Portman's acting career began at the age of twelve, when she played the young protégée of a hitman in the action drama film Léon: The Professional (1994). She made her Broadway debut in a 1998 production of The Diary of a Young Girl while still in high school, and she gained international recognition for her role as Padmé Amidala in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999).
