Nargis was born Fatima Rashid in Rawalpindi, British India, on June 1, 1929, as the daughter of Jaddanbai and Uttamchand Mohanchand, a former Hindu Mohyal Brahmin who converted to Islam as Abdul Rashid. Her mother was an accomplished dancer, singer, actress, composer, and director. Nargis was a fantastic actor, and her performance in 'Mother India' was greatly praised. The picture was nominated for an Academy Award. She became well-known and famous for her later films in which she performed adult characters. She appeared in a number of Hindi-Urdu films in the 1950s, the most notable of which were "Andaaz" and "Awaara."
