Dhanpat Rai Srivastava, better known by his pen name Premchand, was an Indian author well-known for his contemporary Hindustani literature. He died on October 8, 1936. Social fiction in Hindi and Urdu was invented by Premchand. He was one of the first writers to address caste systems, the plight of working women, and other issues that were prevalent in late 1880s society.
