Mangal Pandey was an Indian soldier who played a key role in the events leading up to the outbreak of the 1857 Indian rebellion. He served in the British East India Company's 34th Bengal Native Infantry (BNI) regiment as a sepoy (infantryman). To commemorate him, the Indian government issued a postage stamp in 1984. His life and actions have also been depicted in a number of film adaptations.
