On July 5, 1947, the British Parliament passed the Indian Independence Act. On July 18, 1947, the then-British monarch, George VI, gave his royal assent. The Act abolished the British Crown's title of "Emperor of India." George VI issued a royal proclamation removing the title "Emperor of India" from his titles and styles.
