Jawaharlal Nehru (November 14, 1889, Allahabad, India—May 27, 1964, New Delhi) was the first prime minister of independent India (1947–64), establishing parliamentary government and becoming known for his nonaligned foreign policy. In the 1930s and 1940s, he was also a key figure in India's independence movement. On July 15, 1955, then-President Rajendra Prasad bestowed the Bharat Ratna (India's highest civilian honour) upon Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister.
