Amitav Ghosh (born July 11, 1956 in Calcutta, India) is an Indian-born writer whose ambitious novels explore the nature of national and personal identity, particularly among the people of India and Southeast Asia, through complex narrative strategies. Ghosh grew up in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Iran, where his father was a diplomat. He earned a B.A. (1976) and an M.A. (1978) from the University of Delhi, and worked as a newspaper reporter and editor at the same time.
