Guru Dutt, born Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone on July 9, 1925, and died on October 10, 1964, was an Indian film director, producer, actor, choreographer, and writer. In 2012, he was named one of CNN's "Top 25 Asian Actors." Dutt's artistry was praised, particularly for his use of close-up shots, lighting, and depictions of melancholy. He directed a total of eight Hindi films, several of which have become cult classics around the world.
