The Indian peacock, Pavo cristatus, is a colorful, swan-sized bird with a fan-shaped feather crest, a white patch beneath the eye, and a long, thin neck. The male is more colorful than the female, with a gleaming blue breast and throat and a stunning bronze-green tail of roughly 200 elongated feathers. The peacock was designated as India's national bird in 1963 because it was integral to Indian customs and culture. A peacock represents elegance and beauty. Another reason the peacock was chosen as the National bird was because of its widespread presence across the country, so much so that even ordinary people are familiar with it. Furthermore, no other country has the peacock as its national bird. The peacock met all of these requirements and hence became India's national bird.
