After Mr. Hewlett returned to the San Francisco area from a career at General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y., the two men created Hewlett-Packard while conducting graduate study at Stanford University.

On 14 January 1761, a northern invading army of the Maratha Empire and the King of Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah Durrani, with two Indian Muslim allies—the Rohilla Afghans of the Doab and Shuja-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Oudh—fought at Panipat, roughly 60 miles north of Delhi. The fight is regarded as one of the largest fought in the 18th century, with the most casualties known in a single day in a typical formation combat between two armies. The fight halted future Maratha advances in the north and destabilised their territory for almost ten years. An estimated 60,000–70,000 people were slain in the combat, and around 40,000 Maratha captives were slaughtered as a result.

Puri had myelodysplastic syndrome, a rare kind of blood cancer, and had had brain surgery for it after being hospitalised to the Hinduja hospital on December 27, 2004. His illness necessitated repeated drainage of blood deposited in the cerebral part of the brain, and he eventually lapsed into a coma soon before his death on January 12, 2005, about 7:30 a.m. His body was transported to his home for visitors to pay their respects, and his funeral was held on January 13, 2005, in the Shivaji Park cremation.

Agatha Christie died of natural causes on January 12, 1976, at the age of 85, at her house, Winterbrook House, in the north of Cholsey parish, adjacent to Wallingford in Oxfordshire (formerly Berkshire).
