His illness necessitated repeated drainage of blood deposited in the cerebral part of the brain, and he eventually lapsed into a coma soon before his death on January 12, 2005, about 7:30 a.m. His body was transported to his home for visitors to pay their respects, and his funeral was held on January 13, 2005, in the Shivaji Park cremation.

On 14 January 1761, a northern invading army of the Maratha Empire and the King of Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah Durrani, with two Indian Muslim allies—the Rohilla Afghans of the Doab and Shuja-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Oudh—fought at Panipat, roughly 60 miles north of Delhi.
