William Redington Hewlett, the electrical engineer who raised $538 in 1938 with David Packard to start a little electronics firm in a Palo Alto, Calif, garage that eventually led to the formation of Silicon Valley, died on January 12th at his home in Portola Valley, Calif. He was 87 years old. After Mr. Hewlett returned to the San Francisco area from a career at General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y., the two men created Hewlett-Packard while conducting graduate study at Stanford University.

Shastriji died on January 11, 1966, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan (then the Soviet Union), one day after signing a peace accord ending the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War. Many of Shastri's fans and close relatives refused to believe the circumstances of his death at the time, and have refused to believe them afterwards. Anita Ekberg, 83, died on January 11, 2015, in the facility San Raffaele in Rocca di Papa, Roman Castles, after consequences from chronic diseases. After being pushed down by one of her pet Great Danes, which shattered her hip, the actress had been in a wheelchair for several years. Ekberg's funeral was conducted on January 14, 2015, in the Lutheran-Evangelical Christuskirche in Rome, after which her body was cremated and her ashes were buried in the graveyard at Skanör Church in Sweden.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra  born 12 January 1972 is an Indian politician who now serves as the general secretary of the All India Congress Committee for Uttar Pradesh. She is a member of the politically powerful Nehru-Gandhi family, as the daughter of Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi, the sister of Rahul Gandhi, and the granddaughter of Feroze and Indira Gandhi. She is also a member of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation's board of trustees.

The primary actors in Rakesh Roshan's 1995 Indian Hindi-language fantasy action film Karan Arjun were Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Raakhee, Kajol, and Mamta Kulkarni. Amrish Puri plays the major antagonist, with supporting roles going to Johnny Lever, Arjun, Jack Gaud, Ranjeet, and Aasif Sheikh. Puri had myelodysplastic syndrome, a rare kind of blood cancer, and had had brain surgery for it after being hospitalised to the Hinduja hospital on December 27, 2004. His illness necessitated repeated drainage of blood deposited in the cerebral part of the brain, and he eventually lapsed into a coma soon before his death on January 12, 2005, about 7:30 a.m. His body was transported to his home for visitors to pay their respects, and his funeral was held on January 13, 2005, in the Shivaji Park cremation.

On March 11, 1795, the Maratha Empire and the Nizam of Hyderabad fought the Battle of Kharda. The Marathas triumphed by a landslide. The fight would have far-reaching consequences since the British would take Maratha domination seriously. The Marathas and the Nizam of Hyderabad had joined forces, if briefly, in their struggle against Tipu Sultan of Mysore. In January 1795, the Nizam's army marched forward from Bidar. The combat took place near the Fort of Kharda. The Nizam was defeated and forced to flee to the Kharda Fort. The Marathas besieged the fort, and the Nizam surrendered after a 17-day siege.

Hillary fell on April 22, 2007, while on a vacation to Kathmandu, and was hospitalised after returning to New Zealand. He died of heart failure on January 11, 2008, at Auckland City Hospital. Flags were flown at half-mast on New Zealand public buildings and at Scott Base in Antarctica, and Prime Minister Helen Clark described Hillary's death as a "heartbreaking loss to New Zealand." Zain Javadd Malik, better known by his stage name Zayn, is a British musician who was born on January 12, 1993. Malik, who was born and raised in Bradford, auditioned for the British music competition The X Factor as a single entrant in 2010. Malik was welcomed back into the competition after being ousted as a solo artist, along with four other competitors, to create the boy band One Direction, which went on to become one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. In March 2015, Malik departed the group and obtained a solo recording contract with RCA Records.

Agatha Christie, the English crime author, went missing from her house in Berkshire on Friday, December 3, 1926. It was the ideal tabloid tale, complete with all the components of one of Christie's classic 'whodunit' mysteries. Agatha Christie died of natural causes on January 12, 1976, at the age of 85, at her house, Winterbrook House, in the north of Cholsey parish, adjacent to Wallingford in Oxfordshire (formerly Berkshire). She was laid to rest at Cholsey's St Mary's Churchyard.

Surya Sen's fellow revolutionaries were quickly apprehended and condemned to long jail terms. Sen was cruelly tortured by the ruthless British just moments before his execution on January 12, 1934. According to accounts, his bones, limbs, and joints were crushed with a hammer, and all of his nails were ripped out. Sen's spirit remained unbroken despite the torment. Surya Sen, a former schoolteacher from Naopoara in Chittagong and affectionately known as 'Master Da,' was a leader among these revolutionaries.

Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, AC (born 13 January 1949) is a former Indian Air Force pilot who flew aboard the Soviet Interkosmos Soyuz T-11 on 3 April 1984. Although there have been other astronauts of an Indian heritage who were not Indian nationals, he is the only Indian citizen to journey in space. 

Liam Hemsworth is an Australian actor who was born on January 13, 1990.
