Harchand Singh Longowal, who was born on January 2, 1932, was the President of the Akali Dal during the 1980s Punjab insurgency. On July 24, 1985, he and Rajiv Gandhi signed the Punjab Accord, popularly known as the Rajiv-Longowal Accord. The government agreed to most of the demands of the Akali Dal, which decided to end their protest in exchange. Longowal was slain by Sikh organisations who felt betrayed by the Punjab treaty and opposed it less than a month after signing it.
