The siege of Calcutta was fought on June 20, 1756, between the Bengal Subah and the British East India Company. The Nawab of Bengal, Siraj ud-Daulah, planned to conquer Calcutta in order to punish the Company for building defences at Fort William without permission. Siraj ud-Daulah caught the Company off guard and defeated them decisively. on january 2nd 1757 british forces seize calcutta.
