C R Das and Motilal Nehru founded the Swaraj Party, also known as the Congress-Khilafat Swarajya Party, on January 1, 1923. The Swaraj Party was formed in response to a number of key events, including the withdrawal of the non-cooperation movement, the Government of India Act 1919, and the 1923 elections. In 1923, the Swaraj Party gained 42 of the 104 seats in the Central Legislature. The party's platform called for obstructing the government. They intended to produce stalemates on all measures.
