During the British Raj, Kharsawan State, often spelled Kharsua or kharaswan, was a princely state in India. The state's privy purse was worth 33,000 rupees. During the British Raj, it was one of the Odia Princely states of India, and Odia is the main language spoken there. Saraikela, along with 24 other princely states of the Eastern States Agency, acceded to the Government of India on January 1, 1948, with the intention of merging into the Indian Republic's Orissa province.
