The Godhra train burning happened on February 27, 2002, when 59 Hindu pilgrims and karsevaks returning from Ayodhya were murdered in a fire inside the Sabarmati Express train near the Godhra railway station in the Indian state of Gujarat. The fire's origins are widely questioned. The episode is largely seen as the catalyst for the Gujarat riots that followed, resulting in extensive loss of life, property damage, and homelessness. Estimated casualties range from 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus, according to government data, to upwards of 2,000.
