In February 1786, British General Charles Cornwallis, Earl Cornwallis, was appointed as both Commander-in-Chief of British India and Governor of the Presidency of Fort William, better known as the Bengal Presidency. He supervised the consolidation of British power over a large portion of peninsular India, laying the groundwork for the British Raj.
