Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati (February 12, 1824 – October 30, 1883) was an Indian philosopher, social activist, and the founder of the Arya Samaj, a Vedic dharma reform organisation. In 1876, he was the first to demand for Swaraj as "India for Indians," a cry later taken up by Lokmanya Tilak. He attempted to revive Vedic principles while condemning idolatry and ceremonial devotion. Following that, the philosopher and President of India, S. Radhakrishnan, and Sri Aurobindo both referred to him as one of the "makers of Modern India."
