George V, the Emperor of India at the time, lay the foundation stone for New Delhi, the capital city. The event took place in 1911 at the Delhi Durbar. Sir Herbert Baker and Sir Edwin Lutyens, two British architects, were responsible for the city's design and layout. India's Viceroy, Lord Irwin, inaugurated New Delhi as the country's new capital on February 13, 1931. Since then, New Delhi has been the country's administrative capital, housing all three bodies of government (legislative, judiciary, and executive).
