He is most known for designing and building the world-famous Eiffel Tower for the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris, as well as his participation to the construction of the Statue of Liberty in New York. After retiring from engineering, Eiffel concentrated on meteorology and aerodynamics research, making substantial contributions in both domains. He died on December 27, 1923.
