December 14

George Washington died between ten and eleven o'clock at night on December 14, 1799. His wife, who sat at the foot of the bed, his friends Dr. Craik and Tobias Lear, his housemaids Caroline Branham, Molly, and Charlotte, and his valet Christopher Sheels, who stood in the chamber throughout the day, surrounded him. George Washington died at home following a brief illness in which he lost around 40% of his blood. Washington was not buried for three days, as per his instructions. During that period, his remains was kept in the New Room in a mahogany coffin. On December 18, 1799, he was put to rest in the family tomb after a sombre ceremony at Mount Vernon.
