Pandit Ravi Shankar was an Indian composer and musician best known for popularising the Indian classical instrument Sitar around the world. Shankar grew up learning music and performing with his brother's dance ensemble. He began touring India and the United States after serving as the director of All-India Radio. During this time, he worked with a number of prominent musicians, including George Harrison and Philip Glass. He has cooperated with the famed band 'The Beatles,' further popularising Sitar. Shankar, who received three of India's highest civilian honours, died in California in December 2012, at the age of 92.
