Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi is a name that has become synonymous with Carnatic music. This immaculate vocalist, whose voice had almost heavenly power, is the first singer to receive India's highest civic distinction, the Bharat Ratna. M.S. was exposed to Carnatic music at an early age. That was because she was born into a musical household. Her grandmother, Akkammal, was a violinist, and her mother was a well-known Veena performer. She died on December 11, 2004 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She died as a result of bronchopneumonia and heart abnormalities.
