John Milton (9 December 1608 – 8 November 1674) was an English poet and philosopher who worked for the Commonwealth of England's Council of State and subsequently Oliver Cromwell as a government official. He wrote at a period of theological and political upheaval, and his epic poem Paradise Lost is his most famous work (1667). Paradise Lost is usually regarded as one of the finest masterpieces of English literature, written in blank verse.
