Ambedkar has been suffering with diabetes since 1948. Due to medicine side effects and bad eyesight, he remained bedridden from June to October 1954. During 1955, his health deteriorated. Ambedkar died in his sleep three days after finishing his final manuscript, The Buddha and His Dhamma, on December 6, 1956, at his residence in Delhi. Every year on this day, known as Mahaparinirvana Diwas, people pay their respects to him. On December 7, a Buddhist cremation was held at Dadar Chowpatty beach, which was attended by 500,000 mourners.
