Jayalalithaa was taken to Apollo Hospitals in Chennai on September 22, 2016, suffering from an infection and serious dehydration. On October 12, 2016, her formal duties were turned over to her assistant O. Panneerselvam, however she continued to serve as the state's chief minister. She was also alleged to have had a serious lung infection and septicaemia, both of which were treated. She was re-admitted to the intensive care unit on December 4, 2016, after having a heart attack about 16:45. According to a press release from the hospital, her health was "extremely severe" and she was on life support.
