On 2 December 1898, Indra Lal Roy was born. He was born in Calcutta, where his father was a barrister and Director of Public Prosecutions, as the second son of Piera Lal Roy and Lolita Roy. In World War I, he was the only Indian ace pilot. He earned 10 aerial victories in just over 170 hours of flying time while serving in the Royal Flying Corps and its successor, the Royal Air Force, making him the first Indian flying ace.
