Subhas Chandra Bose was an Indian nationalist who lived from 23 January 1897 to 18 August 1945. His defiance of British authority in India made him a hero among Indians, but his wartime alliances with Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan left a legacy of authoritarianism, anti-Semitism, and military failure. The honorific Netaji (Hindustani for "Respected Leader") was bestowed upon Bose in early 1942 by Indian soldiers of the Indische Legion and German and Indian officials in Berlin's Special Bureau for India.
