Julia Carolyn Child was an American chef, author, and television personality who lived from August 15, 1912, to August 13, 2004. Her first cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and her subsequent television programs—the most notable of which was The French Chef, which debuted in 1963—are credited with introducing French cuisine to the American public.
