The Smithsonian Institution was founded with funds donated by James Smithson (1765-1829), a British scientist who left his estate to the United States with the intention of establishing "at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge." The act establishing the Smithsonian Institution was passed by the United States Senate on August 10, 1846, and was signed into law by President James K. Polk.
