Bengali polymath Rabindranath Tagore (7 May 1861 – 7 August 1941) was a poet, playwright, writer, composer, philosopher, social reformer, and painter. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he used contextual modernism to transform Indian art, Bengali literature, and music. Author of Gitanjali's "profoundly sensitive, fresh, and beautiful" poetry, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, becoming the first non-European and the first lyricist to do so.
