On December 17, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright made the first powered, sustained, controlled, heavier-than-air flights at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.
Five years after their first successful flight in 1903, the Wright brothers demonstrated their flying machine in its first public flight on August 8, 1908.

From 1509 to 1529, Krishnadevaraya was emperor of the Vijayanagara Empire. He is regarded as one of the greatest kings in Indian history and was the third ruler of the Tuluva dynasty. The Vijayanagara Empire in Southern India was revived during the reign of Emperor Krishnadeva Raya in 1509.

STS-28 was the 30th NASA Space Shuttle mission, the fourth shuttle mission dedicated to the United States Department of Defense, and Space Shuttle Columbia's eighth flight. Bengali polymath Rabindranath Tagore (7 May 1861 – 7 August 1941) was a poet, playwright, writer, composer, philosopher, social reformer, and painter. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he used contextual modernism to transform Indian art, Bengali literature, and music. Author of Gitanjali's "profoundly sensitive, fresh, and beautiful" poetry, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, becoming the first non-European and the first lyricist to do so.

Samir Subash Naik, an ex-professional footballer from India who played as a defender for Dempo SC and India, was born on August 8, 1979. He is currently the Goa Professional League's Dempo SC's head coach. Naik plays regularly for India and is a member of the successful Dempo SC team that won two league championships and advanced to the AFC Cup semifinals. In a 2012 international friendly against Oman, he also served as captain of the Indian team.

Kane Stuart Williamson (born August 8, 1990) is a New Zealand international cricketer and the current captain of the New Zealand national team across all formats. He bats right-handed and bowls off spin on occasion. In December 2007, Williamson made his first-class debut.
