Raja Ravi Varma was an Indian painter and artist who lived from 29 April 1848 to 2 October 1906. He is regarded as one of the greatest painters in Indian art history. His works are among the best examples of fusing European academic art with a purely Indian sensibility and iconography. He was particularly notable for making affordable lithographs of his paintings available to the public, which significantly increased his reach and influence as a painter and public figure. His lithographs increased the involvement of the general public in fine arts and defined artistic tastes among the general public. In addition, his religious depictions of Hindu deities, as well as works from Indian epic poetry and Puranas, have received widespread acclaim.
