Bhanu Athaiya (28 April 1929 – 15 October 2020) was an Indian painter and costume designer. She was the only woman in the Bombay Progressive Artists' Group and the first Indian to win an Academy Award. Along with being Bollywood's most iconic costume designer, she had a historically significant early career as an artist, working alongside contemporaries such as M. F. Husain, F. N. Souza, and Vasudeo S. Gaitonde. Two of Bhanu Rajopadhye's paintings were included in the Bombay Progressive Artists' Group exhibition in 1953.
