John Joseph Nicholson, born April 22, 1937, is a retired American actor and filmmaker with a career spanning more than 50 years. He is well-known for playing a variety of starring and supporting roles, including comic characters, romantic leads, anti-heroes, and villains. He played the "eternal outsider, the sardonic drifter" in many of his films, someone who rebels against the social structure. He has received numerous honours, including three Academy Awards.
