On April 21, 2019, Volodymyr Zelenskyy was elected President of Ukraine. Mr Zelensky has earned more than 73% of the vote with virtually all ballots tallied in the run-off vote, with incumbent Petro Poroshenko lagging well behind on 24 percent. Russia says it wants him to demonstrate "good judgement," "honesty," and "pragmatism" in order for ties to improve. Russia is a supporter of rebels in eastern Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelensky, a Ukrainian comedian, has won the country's presidential election by a landslide.
