Shakuntala Devi was an Indian writer and mathematician known colloquially as the "human computer." She was said to be able to perform complex mathematical calculations in her brain and then effortlessly shout out the answers! As the daughter of a circus artist, she was born into a poor household in southern India and began performing at a young age. Her father identified her as a young prodigy and took her to road shows where she demonstrated her mathematical abilities. She died on April 21, 2013, after a long period of suffering from respiratory, cardiac, and renal ailments.
