April 21

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, the Duke and Duchess of York's first child, was born on April 21, 1926, and was baptised in the chapel at Buckingham Palace. She was educated at home alongside her younger sister, Princess Margaret, and subsequently served as a subaltern in the Auxiliary Territorial Service during World War II, rising to the rank of Junior Commander. The coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953, and was broadcast worldwide on radio and, at the young Queen's request, on television, bringing the splendour of the occasion to hundreds of millions of people in ways never previously believed possible.
