Every year on April 22, Earth Day commemorates the beginning of the contemporary environmental movement in 1970. It may be difficult to believe that prior to 1970, a business could blast black clouds of poisonous smoke into the air or dump tonnes of hazardous trash into a nearby stream and do it legally. They couldn't go to court to halt it. Senator Gaylord Nelson established Earth Day in the spring of 1970 to bring this issue onto the national agenda. Twenty million Americans demonstrated in various places around the country, and it worked! The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was established in December 1970 after Congress approved the establishment of a new government agency to address environmental challenges.

J. Robert Oppenheimer who lived from April 22, 1904 to  February 18, 1967 was an American theoretical physicist and University of California, Berkeley professor of physics. Oppenheimer was the wartime director of the Los Alamos Laboratory and is widely regarded as the "Father of the Atomic Bomb" for his role in the Manhattan Project, the World War II effort that produced the first nuclear weapons. Oppenheimer was present at the Trinity test in New Mexico, where the first atomic bomb was detonated successfully on July 16, 1945. He later remarked that the explosion reminded him of a line from the Bhagavad Gita: "Now I am Death, the destroyer of worlds."

William Shakespeare was a well-known English poet, dramatist, and actor who was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564. His birthday is most widely observed on April 23, which is also the date he is said to have died in 1616. William Shakespeare acquired the ancient family property in Henley Street after his father died in 1601, a portion of which was then leased to tenants. Stratford saw more property investments, including the purchase of 107 acres of land in 1602. Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616, at the age of 52, in Stratford-upon-Avon. Shakuntala Devi was an Indian writer and mathematician known colloquially as the "human computer." She was said to be able to perform complex mathematical calculations in her brain and then effortlessly shout out the answers! As the daughter of a circus artist, she was born into a poor household in southern India and began performing at a young age. Her father identified her as a young prodigy and took her to road shows where she demonstrated her mathematical abilities. She died on April 21, 2013, after a long period of suffering from respiratory, cardiac, and renal ailments.

Satyajit Ray, an Indian film director, was known for his sophisticated and profoundly affecting depictions of local family life. His extant works, including collaborations, include 39 plays, 154 sonnets, three long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of which is unknown. His plays have been translated into every major living language and have been performed more frequently than any other playwright's. His works are still being studied and reinterpreted.
