Sumitra Mahajan, born on April 12, 1943, is an Indian politician who served as Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2014 to 2019. She is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. She was the longest-serving Woman Member of Parliament in Madhya Pradesh, representing the Indore constituency from 1989 to 2019, before retiring from electoral politics. She also served as a Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Communications and Information Technology, and Petroleum and Natural Gas from 1999 to 2004. She was also the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment (2004-2009) and the Standing Committee on Rural Development (2004-2009). (2009-2014). In the 16th Lok Sabha, she was the eldest and most senior female member of Parliament.
