A gargantuan beast is devouring anything that strays too close to the heart of a giant elliptical galaxy called Messier 87, more than 50 million light-years away. Stars, planets, gas, and dust—nothing escapes the monster's grasp once it crosses a boundary known as the event horizon. The Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration published the first-ever snapshot of a black hole in 2019 after obtaining it in 2017 in galaxy M87, 6.5 billion times the mass of Earth and 55 million light-years away.
