Martin Luther King, Jr. From 1955 until his assassination in 1968, he was the most visible spokesman and leader in the civil rights movement. He was born on January 15, 1929, and died on April 4, 1968. King, the son of early civil rights activist and minister Martin Luther King Sr., advanced civil rights for people of colour in the United States through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and Mahatma Gandhi's nonviolent activism. Martin Luther King Jr was fatally shot at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968, at 6:01 p.m. CST. He was sent to St. Joseph's Hospital and died at 7:05 p.m.
