Motorola was the first business to create a mobile phone that could be held in one's hand. Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher and executive, made the first mobile telephone call using portable subscriber equipment on April 3, 1973, dialling Dr. Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs, his competitor. Regardless, the call marked a significant step forward in the evolution of mobile technology, but it would take another decade for the DynaTAC to reach consumers and another two decades for cell phones to surpass land lines in global usage. However, "phone" has become associated with "mobile phone," and the newest trend is toward mobile gadgets that aren't actually phones at all. Meanwhile, Google now owns Motorola's mobile division.
