Using riboflavin, UV light reduces SARS-CoV-2 pathogens in blood

Scientists still don’t know whether SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can be transmitted through blood transfusion. However, considering the mystery surrounding this new pathogen and its transmission, researchers at Colorado State University worked on existing technologies to find out that exposing the virus to riboflavin and ultraviolet light can reduce pathogens in human plasma and whole blood products.
