Scientists have discovered a microbe Microsporidia MB on the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya that protects mosquitoes from being infected with malaria. The finding has enormous potential to control the disease. The microbe lives in the gut and genitals of the insects. The researchers are now working on whether the infected mosquitoes can be released into the environment or use spores to impair the disease.
