7 Movies That Failed Despite a Star Cast
Moviegoers often review the cast they would expect to see in the film when it comes to selecting films to watch. It is fun to see popular actors in a new film, after all. If we're talking about A-listers, seasoned actors who have shown that they can lead a film to box office glory and critical acclaim, this is particularly true. That said, there are occasions when not even an all-star cast is adequate to prevent a movie from being a flop. Posted On October 28th, 2020
Cats
Expectations were strong when the film "Cats" came out in 2019. The likes of Judi Dench, Rebel Wilson, Idris Elba, Ian McKellen, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, and Taylor Swift were there, to begin with. This all-star cast, however, could not save the movie from losing at the box office. Estimates show that, against a $95 million budget, the film made $73.7 million.
Batman and Robin
In 1997, "Batman & Robin" came out. Everyone had great expectations from it. Clooney was cast as Batman and Schwarzenegger as Mr Freeze in the film. Alicia Silverstone, Uma Thurman, and Chris O'Donnell joined them as well. The film was made with a budget of $125 million, according to Filmsite, and only had a worldwide gross of $238.2 million.
Gangster Squad
In the Oscar-winning film "La La Land," Stone and Gosling starred together. They also teamed up for "Gangster Squad" however, and critics pointed out that it was mediocre. Josh Brolin, Sean Penn and Giovanni Ribisi also joined Stone and Gosling in the film. The movie made an estimated $105.2 million, against a $60 to $75 million budget.
Boundaries
During its opening weekend, Boundaries made $29,995 from five theatres, for an average of $5,910 per venue. It was called a "moderate start" by Deadline Hollywood while LifeZette called the film a "flop" and in part blamed Fonda's association.
Rock of Ages
A Broadway musical of the same name inspired the film. However, sadly, it is difficult to persuade someone that Tom Cruise is a rock star. It should also be remembered, however, that Cruise's co-stars included Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Bryan Cranston, Paul Giamatti, Mary J. Blige, and Julianne Hough.
