According to the Mercer Cost of Living Survey, Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, is the most expensive city in the world for foreign employees. The Turkmen capital, which was ranked second last year, is a bit of an outlier among the top ten. The continuous financial crisis in Turkmenistan, which has resulted in food shortages and hyperinflation, is highlighted by Mercer as the reason for Ashgabat's rising cost of living in recent years.
