On May 20, the X-Press Pearl, a Singapore ship caught fire, destroying at least 81 containers of "hazardous cargo". Plastic pellets became stuck in the gills and jaws of the fish. Moreover, scores of endangered sea turtles showed ashore on Sri Lankan beaches, some having burn scars on their shells. The bodies of fish, dolphins, and possibly a whale were discovered. About 200 corpses had been tallied as of late June.
