Earthquakes may happen over 400 miles below the Earth's surface and be felt practically on the opposite side of the Earth, says Caltech seismologist Zhongwen Zhan. "A magnitude 8 earthquake occurred in the Kuril Islands in 2013, at a depth of around 400 miles. The event was felt in Australia!"
